The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults
(OCIA)

Interested in Becoming Catholic or Completing Sacraments?

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process for adults needing the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation).

The OCIA is the modern form of the "catechumenate" (Greek for “instruction”) of the early days of the Church. Becoming Christian in the early centuries involved a sharp break with the surrounding culture. New Christians entered into a way of living which demanded deep commitment and often risk to their lives. In the modern world, our faith also demands deep commitment as our beliefs often conflict with those of our society. New believers need thorough preparation as well as caring support as they enter into a relationship with Jesus, the mysteries of His Church and the commitment of Christian living.

How Does the OCIA Work?

Getting Started

  • To get started in the Order , you will first meet to discuss your current status and get registered for the sessions.

  • To set up a meeting, email dbeaumont@stjmod.com or call 209-661-8803.

  • After this initial meeting, you can begin attending weekly teaching sessions whihc meet on Tuesday evenings from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.

OCIA Phase One: Inquiry

  • This period is called “inquiry” because foundational truths of the faith are taught, questions answered, and Inquirers receive the good news of Jesus Christ’s gospel and open the way for spiritual growth. There is no obligation on your part - just come when you can and learn!

  • These sessions usually take 4-6 months to complete and then you'll meet with the Director again and see how things are progressing. If at that time you wish to continue your journey into the Catholic Faith you'll participate in the Rite of Entrance (or "Welcome" for those already baptized) into Phase Two: Catechumentate.

  • For the upcoming rites, you will need a Sponsor (see FORMS below).

OCIA Phase Two: Catechumenate

  • This period, known as the Catechumenate (from the Greek word meaning "teaching"). This phase prepares you to enter into a deeper relationship with God and the Church through deeper teaching about specific doctrines and practices.

  • During this time, Catechumens are expected to begin to live as faithful Catholics - attending Mass each Sunday and on all Holy Days of Obligation, observing liturgical celebrations, prayer, and Catholic practices.

    • Note that mass participation is open to all with the exception of receiving the Eucharist during Communion. This is an act reserved for those in full communion with the Catholic Church (which you will be after receiving the sacraments of initiation!).

After a suitable time has passed (typically at least one full year incuding one Easter season), you will again meet with the Director and discern completing your sacraments. If so then you will enter the next OCIA phase.

OCIA Phase Three: Purification & Enlightenment

  • Purification & Enlightenment is the final, intense, period which coincides with the Lenten season.

  • First, Catechumens participate in the Rite of Election, which formally changes their status to "Elect."

  • Throughout Lent, the Elect participate in several rites all designed to prepare them for receiving the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.

  • For the next year of your formation, you will be considered a "Neophyte."

OCIA Phase Four – Mystagogy

  • After reception of the sacraments of initiation, Neophytes go through a final period of catechesis called Mystagogy.

  • In addition to the sessions, Neophytes live out the fulness of the Catholic life in the community.

  • By going to parish events, attending Holy Hour, attending the daily and Sunday masses, sharing the Eucharist, doing works of charity, etc. , the Neophytes learn to discern how they can share their gifts and talents as good stewards in the parish.
